Are you looking for a fun day out with the kids or with visiting friends? Perhaps you just want to spend quality time with your favourite people out in the fresh air whilst soaking up a bit of culture and experiencing adventure first hand! Whether it's your first visit to Koper, or you have been before and want to discover it from a different perspective, our self-guided Mini Adventure is the perfect way to get acquainted with it, at your own pace and in your own time.
Koper is Slovenia's only port city and as such is a centre for business and industry. The cruise terminal is located only 200m from the old city centre and it brings over 100,000 visitors to the port every year. If one of these mighty cruise liners is in port when you take part in this Mini Adventure, you'll get the chance to wonder at it.
As Koper is right on the border with Italy it has many Italian influences, for example all the street signs are in Slovene and Italian, Italian is widely spoken and Koper is the centre of the Italian ethnic community of Slovenia. Koper was controlled by the Venetian Republic during the 15th and 16th centuries and most of the buildings, palaces and monuments hark back to these days and give the city a delightful charm and elegance which is a lovely surprise after driving through the industrial outskirts.
This Mini Adventure takes in all the main sights of the compact medieval city centre including the harbour with cafes, restaurants and shops. Here you will find the Taverna which was a salt warehouse dating from the 15th century. There's even a city beach if you fancy a relaxing dip after exploring all Koper has to offer. Amble along the historic streets hunting for clues. We've put them in the main square (Titov trg) which has loads of interesting buildings including the Praetorian Palace, the most impressive building to see in Koper. Here you will also come across the Loggia (built in 1463), the Armoury (which was a munitions dump four centuries ago), the Cathedral of the Assumption and the Bell Tower which dominates the Koper skyline. If you feel energetic you can pay to climb the 204 steps to the top and see Koper from a bird's eye perspective.
Step back in time down the narrow pedestrian Čevljarska ulica (Cobbler Street) which leads to Da Ponte Fountain. It means bridge in Italian which is apt as it's shaped like a bridge! Not far from here is the Muda Gate, the last of 12 entrances that once stood in the city walls.
The mission in Koper is to find special objects blown into the city from a mysterious ship during a storm many centuries ago and as you explore you will be following our special map, solving clues as you go along - some are sneaky, some not so much. The clues are set on buildings, monuments and permanent features, solving them will reveal the location of the relic you have been tasked to find on your epic adventure. Become one of the Seeker characters presented in the booklet and that feature on the free collectable badges that are included.
And at the end of the Mini Adventure you will have found the answer to your quest and be able to decode the exclusive 'mini padlock' included in your pack, loaded with lucky Seeker Charms.
Take part in the special challenges along the way too, making the fun last even longer!
With a variety of language options including our Easier English version which has been set up for foreign speakers of English and for students of English, at a Beginner-Intermediate level (A2-B1 level).
