Are you looking for a fun day out with the kids or with visiting friends? Perhaps you just want to spend some time with your favourite people out in the fresh air! Whether it's your first visit to Novo mesto, or you have been before and want to discover it from a different perspective, our self-guided Mini Adventure allows you to explore at your own pace and in your own time. It's the perfect way to get acquainted with one of the prettiest towns in the Dolenjska region.
A town of two halves: the Old Town, perched on a rocky headland with the Krka river surrounding it's toe like shape, and a new town which prospers from two major companies, one that makes pharmeceuticals and chemicals, and another that manufactures Renault cars.
This Mini Adventure covers the Old Town area, taking in the large cobbled square, Main Square (Glavni trg), which is flanked by shops and attractive public buildings. It's here that the town hall sits proudly showing the coat-of-arms of the town along with busts of prominent citizens associated with the town. The first town hall was built in 1720, but demolished in 1905 and replaced with what can be seen today. Not far from here a clue awaits to be discovered at the Church of St Leonard which was built by Fransican monks fleeing the Turks in Bosnia in 1472. The library here contains 12,000 volumes including some from the 12th-century.
A great sightseeing and selfie spot is at the Kandijski Bridge which will be ventured across to find a clue at the other side of the Krka. From the bridge there's a fabulous view of the southern face of the old town.
A highlight of this Mini Adventure is the Breg area, built at the turn of the 18th-century when the city walls that used to sit there were demolished. It's on top of a rocky peninsula overlooking the Krka river, the houses along here used to be occupied by less affluent townspeople. They were built leaning against the remains of the city walls which are still preserved and visible in the walls of the basements. Steps lead down to the river where vegetable gardens tended by inhabitants of the houses lie as well as a popular walking trail. Also located nearby is the Dolenjska Museum which is well worth a visit whilst you are in Novo Mesto. A steep path leads up from Breg to the Chapter Church of St Nicholas, the most important and visible landmark of the town. It contains a famous alterpiece by J.R. Tintoretto who was a Venetian master. Just south of here a section of the medieval town wall that was erected in the 14th century can still be seen. Also close by is the Bishop's Palace, a library dating back to the 15th century containing around 6,000 books.
Your special mission in Novo Mesto will be to locate a magical object that is in danger of causing immense trouble to the people of the town. As you explore to find the clues you will be following our special map, solving clues as you go along - some are sneaky, some not so much. The clues are set on buildings, monuments and permanent features, solving them will reveal the location of the magical object you have been tasked to find on your epic adventure. And at the end of the Mini Adventure you will have found the answer to your quest and be able to decode the exclusive 'mini padlock', loaded with lucky Seeker charms. Become one of the Seeker characters presented in the booklet and feature on the free collectable badges that are included.
